Magnetic Halloween Calendar

Magnetic Halloween Calendar

This project was a blast to put together. It started with this sign I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby...

And now it's a magnetic Halloween calendar...

The sign was already metal, so I knew it would work great for this project! I've been wanting to do a magnetic advent/Halloween calendar for about two years and I'm so excited it's DONE.

I spraypainted the sign black and then painted on the calendar lines with a brush liner.

For the images, I went straight to Lisa's Altered Art
. She is my "go to gal" for all sorts of images. Take a peek at all the cool stuff she does! I just looove all her goodies!

Looking in my craft stash, I found a bag of wooden squares and glued a different image on each wooden square. Here's what they looked like right outta the bag...

Back to my craft stash, and I find some leftover 1-inch magnet squares from a previous craft, and adhered those to the backs of the wooden squares.

Now to work on the calendar day numbers. I printed the numbers in a typewriter font (Headline) and inked those up to match the images. I cut those out and glued 'em on each square. I inked up the edges of each square 'cause that's just a whole lotta fun right there.

One last dig in my craft stash and I found a bag of random Scrabble letters. I found letters for each day of the week, and a few spooky words, too. I just LOVE when a project like this comes together! Then I attache
d magnets to them and put them in place.

Be sure to check out this post for the Christmas version of this calendar!

Here's a few final on a pic for a detailed photo of these fun images!

Signs of Fall - Before and After

I found this sign last weekend at a thrift shop. Nothing wrong with the existing sign, but not my style either. Mainly, I just wanted it as a surface to paint on. It was the perfect size for a Halloween/Fall stencil that I bought many months ago, but have not yet tried.

For the main background, I used my fave green paint (Forest Moss) and did a Burnt Umber wash on top of that. Then I used a nice cream color to stencil the trees and letters. The two crows (see 'em?) are stenciled in Burnt Umber.

This was my first attempt at stenciling. Not bad, but the lines are anything but perfect. So, when everything was dry, I took my ink pad and smudged up the edges and the cream colored areas. It helped (a little) to camoflauge the imperfections. And from a distance, you can't really see the flaws. So I guess this is best displayed up high on a mantle or above kitchen cabinets....

This sign is currently for sale on my Ebay. More before & after projects coming up later this week!

Happy Monday

This bird was outside my studio window chirping away, so I snapped a quick photo. I think he was trying to tell me something...

Halloween Letters - EEK!

I purchased these wooden letters on clearance for about 25 cents each. There wasn't much left to choose from, so I worked with what was available. Once I found the K (there were a ton of E's) I knew I had something I could work with for Halloween.

I painted the edges Licorice Black and then covered the fronts with coordinating black & cream papers. Then I inked 'em up because....well, because it's easy and it makes 'em look good.

Before & After: Halloween Spice Rack Makeover

Although I did this project last year, I haven't blogged about it yet. So, I thought I'd do that today and show some before, during and after photos.

It started out as a sad and dated looking spice rack which I purchased on Ebay. I specifically wanted bottles that had a large enough flat area to work with. These had about a 2x3 flat area which worked great.

First thing I did was remove all the jars from the rack and clean them up. I threw away the contents, peeled off the labels, and washed and dried the bottles.

I spray painted the rack orange, and then used a black wash on top of that to tone down the orange...

Next, I spray painted the bottles black. (The lids were already a dark color, so I left them alone.) I then used stencils to paint stars and moons on the bottles. I freehanded the cursive text. They ended up looking like this:

I made a couple of hangtags next. I used regular manilla tags from the office store which I grunged up with a coffee bath and some oven time. Then I just handpainted on them with acrylic paints. I'd probably skip the tags if I had this to do over. Not too sure it really added anything.

I put everything back in place and it was done! (Note: I painted the words on the bottles toward the top where they would show when displayed in the rack.)

Before and after...

What is YOUR next makeover project? I'd love to hear about it!

Handpainted Halloween Softballs

These are recycled softballs that I've handpainted with different Halloween images. Each ball has four different images painted on it. I love how these look displayed on candlestick pedestals or on a shelf with pumpkins. They make a wonderfully unique Halloween decoration!

This set of handpainted softballs is now available on my Ebay. More softballs coming up very soon!
